QR Codes on Product Packaging
Packaging has fixed, limited space. A QR code lets you attach unlimited information, from full instructions and every ingredient and allergen to warranty terms and video demos, without redesigning the label or shrinking the print to fit.
What small brands actually link to
Full instructions or assembly guide
Printed instruction text on small packaging is often cramped and in a tiny font. A linked page can include step photos or a short video, reducing support questions from customers who couldn't read the print.
Ingredients and allergen details
For food and cosmetics, a linked page can list full ingredient sourcing, allergen cross-contact warnings, and nutritional breakdowns that wouldn't fit legibly on the package itself.
Warranty registration
A code linking directly to a warranty registration form increases registration rates compared to asking customers to find the page on your website themselves. Most never do.
Reorder or refill link
For consumables (coffee, supplements, cleaning refills), a code linking directly to the product page shortens the path from "I'm almost out" to a completed reorder.
Sizing for small packaging
Packaging codes are often printed smaller than business cards, sometimes under 10mm on a product label. At that size, margins for error disappear:
- ▸Use a short URL. A long tracking URL with UTM parameters produces a denser pattern that fails at small sizes, so shorten it first and add tracking parameters separately if your platform supports link redirects.
- ▸Avoid a logo overlay below 15mm print size. At that scale, the extra visual complexity reduces scan reliability more than the branding is worth.
- ▸Use the Square dot style, not Dots or Extra Rounded. The gaps in those styles become proportionally larger at small sizes and are more likely to misread.
Printing on curved or textured surfaces
Codes printed on bottles, jars, or textured labels scan less reliably than flat paper because the camera sees a distorted pattern. Keep the code on the flattest available surface of the package, maximize contrast (dark modules on the label's lightest background color), and test a physical sample, not a flat mockup, before approving the full print run.
Creating your packaging QR code with oh my qr
Choose URL and point it at the specific page (instructions, ingredients, warranty form), not your homepage, which makes the customer search further than necessary. Download the SVG and hand it to your packaging printer at whatever final size the label requires; it won't lose quality at any scale.
